Exercise can be described as any activity involving movement. This can be housework, gardening, taking the dog for a walk or sharing family time at the park. However, a large percentage of the UK’s population is sedentary, defined as a person who sits for long periods of time.

During some tests carried out by Active Aims on 70 office-bound professionals, it was found that over a period of 5 working days, offices staff took and average of 400 steps per day. This is not great considering it is recommended that adults take at least 10,000 steps per day.

Those who sit for 5 or more hours per day significantly increase their chances of an early death, a sedentary lifestyle is associated with anxiety, CVD, mortality, obesity, deep vein thrombosis, depression, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, kidney stones and low back pain.

4 hours of exercise every week decreases the risk of most diseases. In addition, if your diet is balanced and healthy, then the risk of disease is also decreased.

Fitness

Fitness goals are different from just increasing activity levels. If someone is described as fit, they usually possess a number of physical attributes pertaining to physical performance: an ability to utilise oxygen efficiently, have muscular strength and/ or endurance and a good range of motion or flexibility.

To improve fitness levels, training programmes are more specific and involve a series of exercises and training programmes which combine together to work toward physical fitness targets and goals.

If your goal is to improve fitness, then it is crucial that your programme prescription considers the following factors: current physical function and movement patterns, level of aerobic fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. Once your personal trainer has established your current level of fitness, they can prescribe a programme which is specific for you. Your personal trainer will take you through your programme and ensure that you have exactly the right intensity to work with and you will need to put in 100% effort to get the best out of your training.

Increasing your fitness levels is not just about visiting your personal trainer for a fitness session twice a week, it is also about having time to relax and recover. Sleep is very important as it is the time when our bodies repair. Nutrition is equally important as this provides the building blocks for your body to improve. If your daily nutrition is poor then your body won’t respond as well to your workouts as it could.

Consider these points when weighing up your health and fitness:

  • Do I sleep enough? If you wake up tired, then you don’t.
  • Do I eat the right foods? If your bowel function is poor, or you are bloated, or hungry, or tired, then probably not.
  • Do I give myself time to relax? Do you ever just switch off? Read a book, watch TV or meditate.
  • How often am I training? If it’s too often then you won’t get the results you deserve. 2-3 times per week at 100%.
